With the recent passage of Hurricane Irene on August 27, the Goldsboro District was spared much of the damage that occurred to the counties east of us. In Wayne, Duplin and Johnston Counties, most of the damage consisted of fallen trees and power outages. A few Methodists experienced property damage to their homes in the southeast corner of Duplin County. Two church buildings on the same charge (Wesley Chapel and Sarecta) were damaged by fallen trees. There was a good deal of crop damage in Duplin County as well. Dr. John Dutton, our District Disaster Response Coordinator, is now in the process of collecting food for immediate delivery to Pamlico County. Your congregation is encouraged to send a work team to help relieve the suffering of our brothers and sisters down east. You may contact Dr. Dutton at 919 429-1073, or
jdutton@nccumc.org.On September 14 more than 500 loaves of fresh bread, hamburger & hot dog rolls were delivered to the Pamlico Co Fishes and Loaves (the Food Bank) for immediate distribution to the people of Pamlico County. A Goldsboro bread bakery provided these loaves as a way of sharing with Pamlico County. The collection and distribution of food and non-food items needs to continue as the people of Pamlico County and many other counties in eastern North Carolina continue to be overwhelmed by the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The four collections points: Centenary in Smithfield; First Mt Olive; Rose Hill; and Daniels Memorial in Goldsboro continue to serve as drop-off/ collection place for food and specific non-food items. The 2500 lbs of food delivered since September 10 has been packaged and will be in the hands those in need this week.

Moving Pastors
The Goldsboro District welcomes Valerie Hardison as the new pastor of Corinth United Methodist Church in Four Oaks. Valerie will follow the Rev. Bill Spencer, who is going back into retirement. The District also wishes to thank the Rev. Dr. Dennis Draper, who is serving as a Retired Elder at First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive.
Bishops' Call to Action
The Council of Bishops have published their Call to Action. It is the result of an extensive two-year study by two non-church consultants on the current structure of the United Methodist Church and its prospects for the future. Read more.
Need a "Pinch-Hitter" in the Pulpit?
Every pastor should plan on taking a vacation. If you are going on vacation, or if you have an emergency and need someone to fill your pulpit on short notice, remember our District Certified Lay Speakers are ready and willing to assist you. Enlist one by calling our District Lay Speaker Coordinator, Jill Brown (919) 221-8607, or click on jlbrown.faith.believe@gmail.com
Workmen's Comp insurance is not automatically provided for pastors by the Annual Conference. Check your insurance to see whether your church insurance policy covers Workmen's Comp. If you do not have coverage and wish to have it, an affordable source is available at PACT, our conference insurance plan. NC law requires workmen's compensation if a church employees three or more persons. Even if the church employs fewer than three, it may be prudent to secure workmen's compensation insurance.
By now all congregations should have their Safe Sanctuary policy in place. If you need help in completing yours, please contact Linda Harris at the Methodist Building (919) 779-6115.
Is there someone in your church who feels God may be calling them into ordained ministry? Have them consider the steps into the candidacy process.
